Rob and I decided to check out the conditions up the coast, as there was no
wind either at Newburgh (where I live) or Belhelvie (on top of a hill
where he lives). Rob had had a llok at Aberdeen beach on Saturday and the
waves were big and clean, but nobody seemed to be out surfing, and he
doesn't have a surfboard. No wind for his windsurfers either. We went to
Ratty Bay and you could here the surf over the sand dunes, and when I went
over the path, there were some relatively clean waves coming in at around 4
ft and in nice sets. The tide was a bit high, so you had to pick your point
on the beach as some were a bit dumpy nearer the steeper parts of the
beach. Anyway, I had put my 7'3" MiniMal in tha car, and Rob used his new
Naish HybridWave 96 with an uphaul acting as a leash attached to the back
footstrap - seemed to work OK. Had a reasonable hour or so further down the
beach, but the currents were moving you around a bit, but as the tide
started to fall, the waves began to become much cleaner and increased in
size (some were over 6 ft) nearer to the carpark path, so we moved back up
the beach. The currents were a lot less of a problem here and it was really
easy to hold your station and position yourself near the peak. Had a great
couple of hours on this part of the beach catching waves and generally
messing around - neither of us are much good, but we had a lot of fun and
managed a few half decent rides with a couple of turns here and there.
